ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TAX REGISTRATION

Who needs to register for tax?

If you have just registered a company with the Companies Registration Office, the next step is to register it for tax with the Revenue Commissioners. You must register for tax when you start a new company as penalties of up to €4,000 can arise for failure to register as an accountable entity.

Often companies register for tax and VAT to ensure their businesses appear trustworthy and legitimate to their trading partners, customers, clients and suppliers.

How long the tax registration takes?

Revenue will take 3 to 5 working days to issue your tax number (TRN). With the TRN in hand you will be able to start your business operations and open a company business bank account.
The VAT registration can take up to 6 weeks for Revenue to process. As soon as the VAT number has been given to you, you will be able to issue sales invoices and you will be obliged to charge VAT to your clients.
You will be also able to reclaim VAT on start-up costs incurred since the registration with CRO. The VAT registration will be backdated by Revenue to the date of CRO registration.

How to register a company for tax?

Registering online (eRegistration) is the fastest, cheapest and most efficient way of registering for tax. Most Revenue customers are eligible for eRegistration. If you submit a paper application when you should have submitted an online application, it will not be processed. The paper copy will be returned to you with an instruction to complete the registration process through ROS.

Certain customers are not eligible for eRegistration. These are companies that have no Irish-resident directors. If you are not eligible for eRegistration, you must complete one of the following forms and submit it to Revenue:

  • Form TR2 for resident companies registering for tax in Ireland
  • Form TR2 (FT) for non-resident companies registering for tax in Ireland.
To register for tax, you must have a Companies Registration Office (CRO) number issued by the CRO.

Following the registration, you will be given a Tax Reference Number (TRN) to use when trading and filing your tax returns.

Who needs to register for VAT?

Value-Added Tax (VAT) registration is obligatory when your turnover (sales) exceeds or is likely to exceed the VAT thresholds in any continuous 12 month period.

The thresholds are as follows:

  • €37,500 in the case of persons supplying services only.
  • €75,000 for persons supplying goods.
If the turnover is less than a threshold limit, you are not required to register for VAT but you may elect to register for VAT. You cannot backdate your election to register, you can only elect to register for VAT from a current date.
