ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COMPANY NUMBERS

1. CRO Company number

If you wish to do business via a limited company, you will need to register it with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). Most businesses choose to incorporate as a Private Company Limited by Shares (Ltd).

The formation application needs to be submitted to CRO along with signed documents and €50 formation fee. CRO will issue a Certificate of Incorporation together with the CRO Registration number for your company within 3-5 days from the receipt of application.

You can outsource the company registration to a company formation specialist, such as Proxima. All you have to do is to provide details of your business and we will do the rest.

2. Revenue Tax number

Once you have received the CRO registration number, your company must be registered with the Revenue Commissioners. Every company incorporated in Ireland has to be registered for Corporation Tax and the Company Director has to be registered for Income Tax.

Additionally, if you are planning to employ staff and run a payroll, you will need to register the company as an Employer.

Many company directors choose to receive a salary or wages for their work in the business. For that reason, the company will need to be registered as an Employer even if there is no other employees in the business.

We can register your company as a new Revenue customer via ROS (Revenue Online System) and submit the Tax Registration application on your behalf. Typically, Revenue will issue a Tax Number for your company within a week.

3. Company Bank account number

Every company is a legal entity in its own right and it has to be distinguished from its directors and shareholders. Unlike self-employed sole traders who use their own bank account for business needs, company directors are required to keep the company finances separate from their own. You will need to set up a separate bank account for your company as soon as you receive the CRO registration number.

Opening of a Company Bank account is simple. All you need  to do is to complete the registration form, provide company documents and meet a bank official (unless you choose an online bank). We can provide all documentation you require for your chosen bank. Most main street banks take up to 2 weeks to open a company account.

4. VAT number

There is no automatic requirement to register for VAT as your company may carry on a business activity which is out of scope for VAT or its business is under the registration threshold.

Typically, your company will need to be registered for VAT if its volume of business is such that the sales (turnover) in the next 12 months will exceed €75,000 - if you sell goods or €37,500 - if you provide services. A company can also elect to register for VAT before its starts trading to reclaim VAT charged on expenses incurred while setting up the business.

We can process the registration documentation and submit the application on behalf of your company. We also monitor its progress and liaise with Revenue on your behalf.
