If you have just registered a company with the Companies Registration Office, the next step is to register it for tax with the Revenue Commissioners. You must register for tax when you start a new company as penalties of up to €4,000 can arise for failure to register as an accountable entity.
Often companies register for tax and VAT to ensure their businesses appear trustworthy and legitimate to their trading partners, customers, clients and suppliers.
Following the registration, you will be given a Tax Reference Number (TRN) to use when trading and filing your tax returns.
Value-Added Tax (VAT) registration is obligatory when your turnover (sales) exceeds or is likely to exceed the VAT thresholds in any continuous 12 month period.
