How to get a PPS number?

Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) is a unique reference number that you need to access public services in Ireland. It is a national identification number for taxation and other purposes, similar to a Social Security number.  A PPS number format is 7 digits followed by either one or two letters.

Why do I need to have a PPSN?

While a PPS number is not currently required to incorporate an Irish company with the Companies Registration Office (CRO), PPSN is required by the Revenue Commissioners and Register of Beneficial Owners (RBO).

1) All directors of companies registered in Ireland will need an Irish PPS number if they own more than 15% of the shares in the company,

2) All directors who are taking a salary from the company will need PPSN,

3) All directors who wish to register their company for taxes online with the Revenue Commissioners - the online registration form is based on the director's PPSN,

4) Any individual shareholders who are in receipt of dividends from an Irish registered company are also required to apply for a PPS number,

 

What documents are required for PPSN?

1) completed form REG 1,

2) form your current valid EU Passport or National Identity Card, and

2) evidence of your Irish address,

3) evidence of needing a PPSN for a transaction with a specified body. Looking for work is not accepted as proof of this, however if you are applying for a social welfare payment or registering with Revenue Commissioners this should be accepted.

How to apply for the PPSN?

You will need to follow the steps:

1) set up a MyGovID account,

2) then book ahe can still begin the process online from abroad PPSN allocation centre appointment via MyWelfare.ie (as long the PPSN allocation centre for the area you will be living in offers an appointment service),

3) on the date of the appointment, you will then need to present in person to the local PPSN allocation centre with the required documentation,

4) once you have placed the application in person, it normally takes about 1 week for the PPSN to be issued in writing by letter to your address.

What address can be used for PPSN?

 You can use any of the following documents to show evidence of your address:

  • household utility bill
  • an official letter or document
  • a financial statement
  • property lease or tenancy agreement

The document must show your name and address and not be older than 3 months

If you are staying in a hotel or hostel, school or any other type of property, you must present a confirmation of address by a third party such as a hotel or hostel administrator or manager, school principal or property owner.

If you are staying with friends or relatives, an original household bill plus a note from the bill holder confirming your residency at the bill address is acceptable. This note can be written on the bill itself.

 

Can I apply for PPSN from abroad?

It is possible in limited circumstances for non-residents to apply for a PPSN by contacting the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection’s Client Identity Services using this Online Enquiry Form or calling + 353 71 967 2616.
